B.C. food recalls include sausages, shrimp, tahini, and butter |

This month, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued a few public notifications about food recalls involving product sold in British Columbia.

Here’s a summary of recalls for turkey breakfast sausages, Thailand black tiger shrimp, tahini, and hemp butter due to various reasons, ranging from undeclared allergens or ingredients to Salmonella.

The CFIA announced on June 18 that Meadow Valley Meats is recalling its Turkey Breakfast Sausage in B.C. due to milk being an ingredient that isn’t listed on the label.

The sausages are sold in five pound packages, and include all lot numbers starting with 210331, 210525, and 210604.

Anyone with allergies to milk shouldn’t consume this product, as it could cause a serious or life-threatening reaction. Anyone with this product should either dispose of it or return it to the place of purchase.

So far, there haven’t been any reactions reported to the CFIA. This recall was initiated by the company.

The CFIA stated on June 14 that the Phoenicia Group is recalling Al-Rabih brand Tahini Sesame Paste due to possible Salmonella contamination.

The affected products were sold in B.C., Ontario, Quebec, Prince Edward Island, and may be national.

They were sold in 454 gram containers with UPC 7 70338 10053 5 with the codes: Lot #157 29420 Best before 22/OC/19.

Anyone who has this product should not consume it, and should instead throw it out or return it to the place of purchase. Even though food items that are contaminated with Salmonella may not appear or smell spoiled, they can still make a person ill. 

Symptoms can include fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. 

This recall was initiated due to CFIA test results. There hadn’t been any reported reactions linked to the consumption of this product by the time of the recall announcement. 

New World Natural Foods began recalling New World brand Organic Hemp Butter (Raw) in B.C., Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec on June 10 due to undeclared cashews.

The butter is sold in 250 gram containers with UPC 0 59443 40147 9 and codes: LOT# 201131 Best Before 30 SEP 2021.

Anyone with allergies to cashews should not consume this product, as it could cause a serious or life-threatening reaction.

Anyone with this product should dispose of it or return it to the place of purchase.

On June 3, Searay Foods began recalling Searay brand Thailand Black Tiger Shrimp (Size 31 to 40) because they contain sulphites that aren’t declared on the label.

Anyone with sensitivities to sulphites should not consume these recalled products, as it could cause a serious or life-threatening reaction:

• Searay Thailand Black Tiger Shrimp (Raw Headless Deveined) Size 31-40 (454 grams) with UPC 8 27510 00007 4 and codes Production Date: 2020/09/21 Best Before: 2022/09/21 Lot Number: 2008312THL;
• Searay Thailand Black Tiger Shrimp IQF Headless Shell-On (Deveined) Size 31-40 (20 packs x 454 grams) with UPCs 8 27510 00007 4 (inner box) and 1 08 27510 09382 0 (outer box), and with codes Production Date: 2020/09/21 Best Before: 2022/09/21 Lot Number: 2008312THL.

This recall was triggered by CFIA test results.
