Armenian Food Festival returns as take-out event – MassLive.com

The annual Armenian Food Festival St. Gregory Armenian Apostolic Church will take place April 17 as a take-out-only event.

The event is usually a popular time to gather for Armenian foods and socializing, but because of the pandemic, organizers at the church in the Indian Orchard section of Springfield decided to serve take-out only.

“We had a take-out event in the fall, and due to its success, we wanted to have another one for the spring,” said church member Claudia Muradian-Brubach, a board of trustees member. “We all still need to stay safe during this pandemic so in order to share our wonderful food with the community, we will continue to have this take-out event.”

Meals will be served featuring two kinds of grilled kebab — shish kebab (marinated lamb chunks) and losh kebab (seasoned ground lamb and beef) — served with rice pilaf, fasoulia (Armenian green beans) and pita bread. For lighter fare, visitors can order spinach-cheese pie. Baked goods will feature traditional Armenian breads and pastries including choerag, paklava and khadayif.

A half dozen cooks, grillers and bakers will prepare the food at the church.

“If you’ve never had Armenian food before, you’ve missed out. It’s very flavorful,” Muradian-Brubach said.

Many non-Armenian people are regulars at the festival, which draws people because of its “wonderful, flavorful food and also because it is a church event,” she added.

Food can be purchased as a meal, and some sides are a la carte.

Customers can pay via Paypal or personal check prior to the event (preferred) or pay by cash or check on day of pickup. No delivery is available.

Proceeds from the event will be used for the operation of the church.

“We would love to hold our annual Father’s Day Picnic this year if we can,” Muradian-Brubach said; it had to be canceled last year because of the pandemic.

The Spring Armenian Food Festival will take place April 17 from noon to 5 p.m. at 135 Goodwin St.

To place a take-out order or for more information, call the church office at 413-543-4763 or Sima Setian Pariseau at 413-262-7251 or email spariseau@charter.net.
