‘Recipe for Disaster’: Local mixologist makes the perfect Old Fashioned

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — During the pandemic, many of us took up new hobbies.
Some learned how to play an instrument; others focused on home repairs. Many caught up on a must-watch movie list.
As for me, I spent thousands of dollars on expensive liquors and liqueurs for my home bar set-up.
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, my hobby was “drinking.”
But I wanted to make sure I was doing it right (not like what I used to think was “classy”). This time around, I made sure to purchase only the finest ingredients for some delicious, classic cocktails.
For this episode, I was shown some pointers by local mixologist and sommelier Roberto Hernandez, who set up shop inside The Richmond in Stapleton.
Hernandez whipped up two different types of the Old Fashioned: a pre-Prohibition version and a new-age version. Both, obviously delicious.
My problem is I have a heavy hand when it comes to pouring — and that may have been reflected in the taste test.
Tell us which cocktail you’d choose to sip on by watching this episode of “Recipe For Disaster,” the show where we take your family recipes and local Staten Island dishes and drinks, then try to recreate them in my kitchen.
Hence, “disaster.”
New episodes of “Recipe For Disaster” post every other week. Here’s how to check them out:
