Joliet museum puts new meaning to shopping local – The Herald-News

Shop local this weekend without ever leaving your car – or having to wrap the gifts when you get home, either.

The Joliet Area Historical Museum gift store is offering a special in-person shopping day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday.

Here how it works. Pull up to the museum’s circle drive at 204 N. Ottawa St. in Joliet, call 312-978-1282, and then museum representatives will shop for you while you remain in your car. Payment will be by credit card.

According to the museum, all patrons will receive a 5% discount and museum members receive a 15% discount.

In the addition, the museum will offer free gift wrapping and complimentary to-go craft bags for children.

Social distancing guidelines will be followed and everyone will be wearing facemasks.

Available products are arranged by themes on the website: clothing, Joliet, books, Route 66 and Old Joliet Prison.

Clothing items include hoodies, T-shirts and long-sleeved shirts, caps and knits hats and even a baby onesie. Themes include the Blues Brothers, Old Joliet Prison and Route 66 (socks only).

Topics among the 16 books listed on the website include Joliet history, the history of Joliet Junior College, Old Joliet Prison history, Joliet transportation and industry, abandoned places in Illinois, Joliet picture postcards series, traveling along Route 66 and even a cookbook featuring Route 66 recipes.

In addition to clothing and books featuring the Old Joliet Prison, other prison-themed items include pins, key chains, coasters (including a set that glows in the dark), ready-to-go mugs, holiday tree ornaments and a sewing kit.

Other Joliet-related items include an economy car ornament and magnets. And how about dish towels that feature Route 66?

For more information about Saturday’s event or to order products, call jolietmuseum.org or call 312-978-1282.
