No cocktails by the beach with a laptop, then. </p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>The intention was very clear. Sure, you can do more flexible working than you did before – but most people will still have to come into the office. </p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>That thinking seemed to fly in the face of much of what we heard from Silicon Valley executives last year, when they championed the virtues of remote working. </p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>For example, Twitter’s Jack Dorsey made <a href=”https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2020/10/01/twitter-work-from-home/” class=”ssrcss-hiczm3-InlineLink e1no5rhv0″>headlines across the world last May, when he said</a> “Twitter employees can now work from home forever”. </p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>It was speculated that after Covid, the “new normal” for Silicon Valley might be a workforce heavily geared around remote working, with tech companies needing only minimal staff on-site. </p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>It’s increasingly looking like that’s not going to happen. </p></div></div><div data-component=”unordered-list-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><div class=”ssrcss-1pzprxn-BulletListContainer e5tfeyi3″><ul role=”list”><li><a href=”https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-52767773″ class=”ssrcss-hiczm3-InlineLink e1no5rhv0″>How cities might change if we worked from home more</a></li><li><a href=”https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-56469395″ class=”ssrcss-hiczm3-InlineLink e1no5rhv0″>’People have forgotten how to be sociable'</a></li><li><a href=”https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-56598933″ class=”ssrcss-hiczm3-InlineLink e1no5rhv0″>Google rejigs remote working as it reopens offices</a></li></ul></div></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>And if you really look at the statements made by tech bosses, some of the nuances were skirted over by the press.</p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>For example, when Mr Dorsey said employees could work at home “forever”, he added, ” if our employees are in a role and situation that enables them to work from home.” </p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>That was a pretty important “if”. </p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>And in fact, Twitter has clarified that it expects a majority of its staff to spend some time working from home and some time in the office. </p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>Pretty much every Silicon Valley tech firm has said that it is now committed to “flexible” or “hybrid” working. </p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>The problem is those terms can mean almost anything. </p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>Is that Fridays off? We believe it enables us to invent, collaborate, and learn together most effectively.” </p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>Not exactly a ringing endorsement of the new work-from-home age, then. </p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>Part of the hesitancy is that although many employees want more flexibility, it’s still not at all clear what kind of model works for the companies. </p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>”None of us have this all figured out,” said Carolyn Everson, vice-president of Facebook’s global business group, when talking about current work-from-home arrangements.</p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>”We are making this up on the fly.”</p></div></div><div data-component=”crosshead-block” class=”ssrcss-mysbf6-ComponentWrapper-CrossheadComponentWrapper e1xue1i84″><h2 class=”ssrcss-qozapo-StyledHeading e1fj1fc10″>Remotely attractive</h2></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>Harvard Business School professor and remote working advocate Prithwiraj Choudhury says that tech companies have long been at the vanguard of remote working.</p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>”The early adopters and the companies that are embracing this model and building the organisation around that remote work model will have a huge advantage in attracting talent,” he says. </p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>That is certainly the hope. </p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>No tech business wants to lose able employees to rivals who will allow them to work more flexibly. </p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>Companies like Spotify now appear to have some of the most “flexible” working practices for its staff. </p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p><a href=”https://hrblog.spotify.com/2021/02/12/introducing-working-from-anywhere/” class=”ssrcss-hiczm3-InlineLink e1no5rhv0″>In a recent statement</a> it said: “Our employees will be able to work full time from home, from the office, or a combination of the two. </p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>”The exact mix of home and office work mode is a decision each employee and their manager make together.”</p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>But it did add: “There are likely to be some adjustments to make along the way.” </p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>So Spotify’s definition of flexible working is very different to Google’s, which in turn is very different to Amazon’s. </p></div></div><div data-component=”image-block” class=”ssrcss-18mjolk-ComponentWrapper But remote working’s biggest test is going to be when the office starts opening up – let’s say at 50% capacity. </p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>When meetings are being held partially in person and partially on Zoom, is the dynamic going to work quite so well? </p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>And when some team members develop face-to-face, in-person relationships with managers, will remote workers feel disadvantaged? </p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>Last week, IBM announced its proposed system of remote working, with 80% of the workforce working at least three days a week in the office. </p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>”When people are remote, I worry about what their career trajectory is going to be,” said IBM chief executive Arvind Krishna.</p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>”If they want to become a people manager, if they want to get increasing responsibilities, or if they want to build a culture within their teams, how are we going to do that remotely?” he asked.</p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>Tantalisingly, we are about to find out what works and what doesn’t, because there are so many differing approaches being taken by tech companies. </p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>And like so much of modern day life, other businesses are looking over at the west coast of America to see what’s working here – and what isn’t. </p></div></div><p><strong><a href=”https://blockads.fivefilters.org”></a></strong> <a href=”https://blockads.fivefilters.org/acceptable.html”>(Why?)</a></p> Mon, 05 Apr 2021 23:18:57 +0000 By James Clayton

porn videos promoted to first-time users of the UK’s leading adult sites are labelled with text describing sexually violent acts, according to a study.</b></p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>It analysed titles and descriptions of 131,738 videos on Pornhub, XVideos and XHamster’s launch pages.</p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>One researcher said the prevalence of descriptions of rape, physical abuse and incest was “shocking”.</p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>The sites have challenged the study and said they remove illegal content.</p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>The findings are published in the <a href=”https://academic.oup.com/bjc/advance-article/doi/10.1093/bjc/azab035/6208896″ class=”ssrcss-hiczm3-InlineLink e1no5rhv0″>latest issue of The British Journal of Criminology</a>.</p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>The researchers involved took hourly screenshots of the homepages on the three most popular porn websites, over a six-month period between 2017 and 2018.</p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>Descriptions and titles – but not the content of the videos themselves – were searched-for keywords that corresponded with the World Health Organisation’s definition of sexual violence.</p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>The researchers then excluded what they considered to be consensual BDSM (bondage, domination and sado-masochism) videos from their findings.</p></div></div><div data-component=”crosshead-block” class=”ssrcss-mysbf6-ComponentWrapper-CrossheadComponentWrapper e1xue1i84″><h2 These days the loss-making business doesn’t even make the global smartphone top 10 list. Market research firm IDC places it 11th.</p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>But its decision to finally give up marks a significant moment.</p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>Not only because it might be the catalyst for other struggling companies, such as Sony, to make the same decision.</p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>But also because LG had distinguished itself by trying to offer something different to the rest of the market.</p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>It was only in January that it teased what <a href=”https://twitter.com/LeoKelion/status/1348627140653297664″ class=”ssrcss-hiczm3-InlineLink e1no5rhv0″>had been intended to be its next innovation</a>: a handset whose screen would have expanded in size by rolling out more of its flexible display when required.</p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>”LG failed to hit the sweet spot for consumers despite providing short bursts of excitement with brilliant technology – some of its high-end products were cool but just too niche,” Natalya Paul, digital editor of Stuff magazine, told the BBC.</p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>”And as for its more mainstream smartphones, they just didn’t do things as well as the competition.”</p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>The shame of the matter is that this should have been an opportune moment for LG.</p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>Samsung’s latest Galaxy S21 represents a fairly conservative update to its predecessor.</p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>And Huawei – which was briefly the world’s bestselling Android phone-maker – looks like it could also be on the way out after the US blocked its access to the processor chips it needs.</p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>But a number of other Chinese brands, including Xiaomi, Vivo and OnePlus, are prospering with advanced models priced at levels LG simply can’t profitably compete with.</p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>”LG’s decision to abandon mobile phones reflects the unrelenting competitive pressure it has faced in recent years,” Ben Wood from CCS Insight commented.</p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div capacitive tech to detect finger taps by changes in the display’s electrical field rather than pressure, only the iPhone could register more than one finger at once, allowing it to do things like pinch-to-zoom.</p></div></div><div data-component=”text-block” class=”ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83″><div class=”ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2″><p>LG’s phone did have
