Covid-19 Rewrote the Rules of Shopping. What Is Next? – The Wall Street Journal

Covid-19 changed the way we shop. The big question now is which of the new habits will stick once the pandemic recedes.

Instead of lining up on Black Friday for a bargain-priced TV, shoppers ordered from home and picked up curbside. Even those who rarely bought online before the pandemic relied on the internet to bring them everything from groceries to pajamas to fake eyelashes.

“Consumers found some of the experiences forced by Covid to be convenient,” said

Stefan Larsson,
the chief executive officer of PVH Corp., which owns Tommy Hilfiger, Calvin Klein and other brands. “Anything that they perceive as making their life easier will be here to stay.”

Some retailers won’t be around to find out. Weaker players such as Lord & Taylor and J.C. Penney Co. <a href=”https://www.wsj.com/articles/landlords-strike-deal-to-acquire-bankrupt-j-c-penney-11599676718?mod=article_inline” target=”_blank” class=”icon none”>filed for bankruptcy protection and closed hundreds of stores, while big companies such as
Walmart Inc.,
Target Corp.
,
Amazon.com Inc.
and
Home Depot Inc.
consolidated their power.

<div class=”media-object scope-web|mobileapps
inline
“>

<!– nothing –>

Those that survived are now experimenting with new ways of doing business. They are <a href=”https://www.wsj.com/articles/levis-hilfiger-push-a-new-kind-of-online-shopping-it-looks-a-lot-like-qvc-11602424800?mod=article_inline” target=”_blank” class=”icon none”>streaming virtual shopping events and allowing consumers to book online consultations. They are doing away with traditional cashiers and rolling out contactless payment systems. They are using their stores as warehouses that deliver packages to customers directly.

Some executives and consumers are confident these new approaches will stick. They say they don’t expect a return to the Black Friday frenzy of holidays past, nor do they expect discounting to become as widespread as it was before the pandemic. But they do expect malls will make a comeback once the virus is under control. Not everyone agrees with these predictions.

What follows is a debate about the future of shopping, and whether the trends that emerged in the last year are here to stay.

Holiday shopping won’t be the same

Black Friday will still be a big shopping event in the future, but Covid-19 <a href=”https://www.wsj.com/articles/black-friday-deals-become-tamer-as-covid-19-alters-sales-strategies-11606473001?mod=article_inline” target=”_blank” class=”icon none”>showed us the insanity of lining up in the early hours of the morning for single-day door-busters such as big screen TVs and air fryers.

Prepare instead for big holiday promotions to start earlier and last longer as a way of stretching out the season. Last year Amazon <a href=”https://www.wsj.com/articles/an-october-prime-day-opens-a-remade-holiday-shopping-calendar-11602501518?mod=article_inline” target=”_blank” class=”icon none”>moved its Prime Day to October from July, and other chains from Walmart to
Bed Bath & Beyond Inc.
dangled holiday discounts before Halloween that in past years wouldn’t have been available until late November.

Photo: Marta Lavandier/Associated Press

A longer holiday season “makes everything work so much more efficiently,” said

Joanne Crevoiserat,
the CEO of Tapestry Inc., which owns Coach and Kate Spade.

This doesn’t mean that <a href=”https://www.wsj.com/articles/fedex-ups-are-managing-surge-in-packages-with-strict-limits-on-shippers-11608028201?mod=article_inline” target=”_blank” class=”icon none”>holiday shipping delays will disappear. Executives said slower deliveries are still likely because they expect e-commerce spending to remain elevated even as the pandemic recedes.

<div class=”media-object scope-web

Some shoppers, burned by delays last year, said they learned their lesson. “This year, I plan to shop earlier,” said Annie Ray, a 29-year-old digital marketing specialist in St. Louis. The Christmas presents she purchased last year didn’t arrive at the homes of her friends and family until after the holiday was over.

Malls will be back—with a new look

Retailers from
Macy’s Inc.
to Coach are betting their mall stores will make a comeback even though many more shopping centers could still turn out their lights. A quarter of the nation’s malls will close by 2023, according to

Deborah Weinswig,
chief executive of retail and technology research and advisory firm Coresight Research.

<div class=”media-object scope-web|mobileapps
inline
“>

<figure class=”media-object-image img-inline”>

<div class=”image-container responsive-media”>
<img src=”https://images.wsj.net/im-310342?width=620&size=1.5″ layout=”responsive” placeholder height=”413.3333333333333″ width=”620″ alt=”Shoppers walk through Baybrook Mall, which is southeast of Houston. “>

Photo: Jeff Lautenberger for The Wall Street Journal

To survive, U.S. malls need to make dramatic changes and borrow from what works elsewhere. In China, malls have become studios for live-stream shopping and other events, Ms. Weinswig said. Roughly 40% of mall square footage in China is devoted to food and beverage, compared with 11% in the U.S., according to Ms. Weinswig.

“Going to a mall should be about getting out with your family and having fun, not about buying a blue button-down shirt,” Ms. Weinswig said.

<div class=”media-object scope-web|mobileapps
wrap
“>

<!– nothing –>

Mall owners need to invest in theme parks and other attractions to woo shoppers, said
Cowen Inc.
analyst

Oliver Chen,
<a href=”https://www.wsj.com/articles/malls-theme-park-attractions-covid-debt-11611267831?mod=article_inline” target=”_blank” class=”icon none”>even though some of these additions sat empty during 2020. “There will be pent-up demand for experiences and that will include a trip to the mall,” he said.

This doesn’t mean that weaker malls with high vacancy rates will have an easy time. “We have a mall in my town that was always kind of a dead mall and I don’t see it making a comeback,” said Daniel Robbins, a 37-year-old owner of a podcast network who lives in Mission Viejo, Calif.

Retailers will rely less on discounts

Discounting became less prevalent during the pandemic as retailers reduced inventory and <a href=”https://www.wsj.com/articles/retailers-cut-back-on-choices-we-dont-need-three-types-of-red-11605934806?mod=article_inline” target=”_blank” class=”icon none”>offered customers less variety of everything from can openers to towels.

Some big retailers do not expect this to change. In fact they are using data to sell more items at full price by personalizing promotions rather than offering broad deals to everyone. Macy’s, for instance, is tailoring its promotions based on a customer’s location and buying habits.

“We’re trying to minimize the unnecessary promotions and markdowns,” Adrian Mitchell, Macy’s finance chief, told analysts in February.

How will the pandemic affect America’s retailers? As states across the nation struggle to return to business, WSJ investigates the evolving retail landscape and how consumers might shop in a post-pandemic world.

Gap Inc.
also uses past purchasing and browsing history to personalize product recommendations. “Showing the right products to the right people at the right time helps you discount less,” said

John Strain,
Gap’s chief digital and technology officer. “The better you know someone, the better you can target what they want.”

Some executives don’t think retailers can maintain that discipline once the economy opens up and <a href=”https://www.wsj.com/articles/are-luxury-mystery-boxes-the-future-of-discount-shopping-11611072599?mod=article_inline” target=”_blank” class=”icon none”>consumer demand snaps back. “If we get back to a more normal situation, retailers will get exuberant and buy too much and have to mark down,” said

Stephen Sadove,
the former CEO of Saks.

A store is no longer a store

Stores morphed into Amazon-style fulfillment centers during the pandemic as retailers looked for places to pack online orders.

One reason that won’t change once the economy reopens: It is cheaper. Target said it costs on average 40% less to ship orders that it fulfills from its stores, compared with the expense of shipping from its warehouses.

<div class=”media-object scope-web|mobileapps

Expect more attempts to retrofit stores so consumers feel comfortable returning, such as contactless checkout and virtual makeup try-ons. Roughly 80% of women said they wouldn’t feel comfortable testing beauty products in stores even after they are vaccinated, according to a survey from analytics company First Insight.

Major chains closed about 8,700 stores in 2020 after shuttering 9,800 in 2019, according to Coresight. Retailers will continue to purge underperforming locations while negotiating lower rents from landlords to <a href=”https://www.wsj.com/articles/retail-chains-shed-stores-but-it-isnt-good-for-business-11605436204?mod=article_inline” target=”_blank” class=”icon none”>make the remaining spaces more viable.

Mr. Robbins, the California resident, said he was in an
H&M
store in Las Vegas last month that had a DJ. “People were hanging out and having fun,” he said. “The longer you stay, the more likely you are to buy something.” He said he bought a pair of jeans and his wife bought some dresses.

Curbside won’t get kicked to the curb

Picking up everything from food to furniture at a store’s curbside became a regular habit for many consumers during the pandemic. Now there is no going back, retail executives and shoppers said.

For consumers, it is about convenience. “It makes things so much easier,” said Alicia Butler, a 39-year-old editor for a health website who lives in Ellington, Conn. “I can just grab my stuff without having to spend a lot of time in the store.” For retailers, it is a money saver. “It frees up the retailer from the last mile, which is an expensive part of the shipping cost,” said Cowen’s Mr. Chen.

Target estimates that it costs an average of 90% less when shoppers pick up their orders curbside or in stores, compared with shipping from a warehouse.

John Mulligan,
Target’s operations chief, told analysts in August that customers who try curbside pickup are more likely to increase their overall spending with the chain.

<div class=”media-object scope-web|mobileapps

“>

<figure class=”media-object-image img-inline”>

<div class=”image-container responsive-media”>

There is a downside. Retailers lose out on impulse purchases when shoppers don’t come into stores. So expect to see more upselling curbside, said Renee Harwood, a retail adviser to RingCentral Inc., a communications platform that helps retailers with their curbside approach. When the employee delivers a package to the customer’s car, “he or she might say: ‘We have a matching jacket for that, would you like to see it?’”

Shopping will become a virtual reality

As e-commerce proliferates, the barriers separating physical and online shopping experiences will blur. Chains are <a href=”https://www.wsj.com/articles/stores-have-a-mission-getting-you-to-keep-that-thing-you-bought-online-11612866602?mod=article_inline” target=”_blank” class=”icon none”>adding virtual fitting rooms, hosting live-stream shopping events and allowing shoppers to make virtual appointments with sales associates and stylists. Coach has added videos to its website that help shoppers see how a bag looks on a person’s body, Tapestry’s Ms. Crevoiserat said.

<div class=”media-object scope-web|mobileapps

“We’re looking at adding virtual beauty advisers, skin-care diagnostic tools, virtual reality, and live stream shopping,” said Matt Baer, Macy’s chief digital officer.

E-commerce accounted for 21.2% of retail sales, excluding autos and gas, at the end of 2020, compared with 18% at the end of 2019, according to research firm
IHS Markit.
In apparel and sporting and leisure goods, the ratio is nearly 40%, according to a McKinsey & Co. report for trade group Retail Industry Leaders Association.

Customers that want to surround themselves with a community when they shop can turn to Instagram and TikTok. More than one in three shoppers made a purchase on social media in the past year, according to a survey in November by Bazaarvoice, which provides software that lets retailers collect and display user-generated content.

“An important aspect of shopping for some people is that social element, going with your friends to the mall,” said Mike Karanikolas, co-CEO of online clothing retailer

which has more than 4.5 million Instagram followers. “Shopping on Instagram can provide that element.”

It almost always encompasses a Friday and Saturday. That’s because you’ll likely end up buying things you don’t really need and forgetting things you do need. This will force you to make extra trips to the store, which will cost you time and money.

“People waste a ton of money when they don’t write out a list of what they need before heading into the store,” said Kelly Anne Smith, former writer and email content specialist at The Penny Hoarder. “Not having a plan before shopping is one of the quickest ways to blow your entire grocery budget.”

<div class=”caas-img-container caas-img-loader”><img class=”caas-img caas-lazy has-preview” alt=”eating out, father, father and son, restaurant bill, son” src=”https://finance.yahoo.com/news/costly-mistakes-people-while-grocery-100018320.html” data-src=”https://s.yimg.com/ny/api/res/1.2/IvQAfFxsNRXjyRR2VrNaCw–/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTU0MA–/https://s.yimg.com/uu/api/res/1.2/1I5oyyQrO.GZJFGlnctKXA–~B/aD0xMDgwO3c9MTkyMDthcHBpZD15dGFjaHlvbg–/https://media.zenfs.com/en/gobankingrates_644/d32a09817a316053c35ca8f15d164242″><img alt=”eating out, father, father and son, restaurant bill, son” src=”https://s.yimg.com/ny/api/res/1.2/IvQAfFxsNRXjyRR2VrNaCw–/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTU0MA–/https://s.yimg.com/uu/api/res/1.2/1I5oyyQrO.GZJFGlnctKXA–~B/aD0xMDgwO3c9MTkyMDthcHBpZD15dGFjaHlvbg–/https://media.zenfs.com/en/gobankingrates_644/d32a09817a316053c35ca8f15d164242″ class=”caas-img”>

eating out, father, father and son, restaurant bill, son

Shopping Without a Plan

Plan out your meals for the entire week — and check your pantry, fridge and freezer — before you head out to the grocery store so you can avoid making several trips to the supermarket during the week and blowing your budget.

“This plan has the added bonus of saving you more money by not dining out,” Fobes said. “Let’s face it, when you don’t have something on hand to make for dinner, it is easy to just go out to eat.”

If a family dines out one additional time a week due to not having a menu plan, the meal can easily run $25 or more, Fobes said. That can add up to $1,300 a year.

<div class=”caas-img-container caas-img-loader”><img class=”caas-img caas-lazy has-preview” alt=”grocery shopping, impulse buy, woman” src=”https://finance.yahoo.com/news/costly-mistakes-people-while-grocery-100018320.html” data-src=”https://s.yimg.com/ny/api/res/1.2/dnZSpH3RAjmis8nCNev6qg–/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTU0MA–/https://s.yimg.com/uu/api/res/1.2/3Aby8t7qs48bqP36gwYBRg–~B/aD0xMDgwO3c9MTkyMDthcHBpZD15dGFjaHlvbg–/https://media.zenfs.com/en/gobankingrates_644/16c9a34a5c7d32870ad21e3055830818″><img alt=”grocery shopping, impulse buy, woman” src=”https://s.yimg.com/ny/api/res/1.2/dnZSpH3RAjmis8nCNev6qg–/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTU0MA–/https://s.yimg.com/uu/api/res/1.2/3Aby8t7qs48bqP36gwYBRg–~B/aD0xMDgwO3c9MTkyMDthcHBpZD15dGFjaHlvbg–/https://media.zenfs.com/en/gobankingrates_644/16c9a34a5c7d32870ad21e3055830818″ class=”caas-img”>

grocery shopping, impulse buy, woman

Making Impulse Buys

Another benefit of shopping with a list is that it can help you avoid making impulse buys. “Impulse buying is the biggest mistake,” said Stephanie Nelson of Coupon Mom. “Buying appealing but perhaps full-priced items that you don’t need is the most expensive mistake shoppers make.”

Learn the immediate things you can do to resist an impulse buy. The key is to actually stick to your list. Check items in your cart against your list before you leave the store to make sure you haven’t added too many things you weren’t originally planning to buy.

<div class=”caas-img-container caas-img-loader”><img class=”caas-img caas-lazy has-preview” alt=”Sydney, Australia – November 13, 2017: Aldi supermarket entrance interior in Edgecliff.” src=”https://finance.yahoo.com/news/costly-mistakes-people-while-grocery-100018320.html” data-src=”https://s.yimg.com/ny/api/res/1.2/phOhAs89CSUKS2WuedM_PQ–/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTU3NC4wODYzNzg3Mzc1NDE1/https://s.yimg.com/uu/api/res/1.2/YvY0O_qnznDVLyn25Zgkcg–~B/aD0xMDgwO3c9MTgwNjthcHBpZD15dGFjaHlvbg–/https://media.zenfs.com/en/gobankingrates_644/e1227dd073a6526b3067192a7a80f7b7″><img alt=”Sydney, Australia – November 13, 2017: Aldi supermarket entrance interior in Edgecliff.” src=”https://s.yimg.com/ny/api/res/1.2/phOhAs89CSUKS2WuedM_PQ–/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTU3NC4wODYzNzg3Mzc1NDE1/https://s.yimg.com/uu/api/res/1.2/YvY0O_qnznDVLyn25Zgkcg–~B/aD0xMDgwO3c9MTgwNjthcHBpZD15dGFjaHlvbg–/https://media.zenfs.com/en/gobankingrates_644/e1227dd073a6526b3067192a7a80f7b7″ class=”caas-img”>

Sydney, Australia – November 13, 2017: Aldi supermarket entrance interior in Edgecliff.

Ignoring Weekly Ads

It’s easy to just walk by the stack of weekly sales circulars as you enter the grocery store. But this weekly ad flyer could be the key to growing your savings.

“Pick up the store ad when you walk in the front door of the store,” Nelson said. “Even if you haven’t made a detailed list, you’ll see what the rock-bottom deals are on the front page.” Supermarkets also post weekly ads on their websites, so you can plan your shopping list based on the best deals.

<div class=”caas-img-container caas-img-loader”><img class=”caas-img caas-lazy has-preview” alt=”coupons” src=”https://finance.yahoo.com/news/costly-mistakes-people-while-grocery-100018320.html” data-src=”https://s.yimg.com/ny/api/res/1.2/cFhDchP8jqTdE43iwa992Q–/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTU0MA–/https://s.yimg.com/uu/api/res/1.2/MxBF0JpYX7ynXXCMub0o2A–~B/aD0xMDgwO3c9MTkyMDthcHBpZD15dGFjaHlvbg–/https://media.zenfs.com/en/gobankingrates_644/22ed5dc12205822b1331fdb3144c6076″>

coupons

Overlooking Easy Deals

Not only will the weekly ad show you what’s on sale, but it will also feature special promotions. For example, your grocery store might run a promotion that gives you a free gallon of milk when you buy three boxes of sale-priced cereal, Nelson said.

“If you don’t know about the promotion, you might get three boxes without grabbing the free item,” Nelson said. If you don’t check the weekly ad for these easy-to-score deals, you’ll likely miss out on savings.

<div class=”caas-img-container caas-img-loader”><img class=”caas-img caas-lazy has-preview” alt=”catalog, recipe card, recipes” src=”https://finance.yahoo.com/news/costly-mistakes-people-while-grocery-100018320.html” data-src=”https://s.yimg.com/ny/api/res/1.2/k1_glqy84ObfpnSMmAcbag–/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTU0MA–/https://s.yimg.com/uu/api/res/1.2/Pl.iYefuQxbzNfV68n3P6g–~B/aD0xMDgwO3c9MTkyMDthcHBpZD15dGFjaHlvbg–/https://media.zenfs.com/en/gobankingrates_644/c48246436831656adba4e4b6c591df95″><img alt=”catalog, recipe card, recipes” src=”https://s.yimg.com/ny/api/res/1.2/k1_glqy84ObfpnSMmAcbag–/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTU0MA–/https://s.yimg.com/uu/api/res/1.2/Pl.iYefuQxbzNfV68n3P6g–~B/aD0xMDgwO3c9MTkyMDthcHBpZD15dGFjaHlvbg–/https://media.zenfs.com/en/gobankingrates_644/c48246436831656adba4e4b6c591df95″ class=”caas-img”>

catalog, recipe card, recipes

Shopping For a Recipe

On average, only two out of 10 items in a recipe will be on sale in a given week, said Teri Gault, author of “Shop Smart, Save More.” If your shopping list is based on ingredients you need for a recipe, you’ll end up overpaying for about 80% of what goes in your cart.

“Instead, choose recipes according to what you already have and what’s on sale,” Gault said. So, if chicken is on sale but beef isn’t, opt for chicken recipes. When you run out of something, there’s a good chance that what you need will not be on sale, Gault said.

Grocery sales run in cycles, so you’ll likely find most items you need are discounted at some point each month. “By stocking up on sale items that you regularly use, you should rarely be forced to pay full price,” she said. According to Gault, the best sales are when items are marked down at least 50%.

Be Aware: <a href=”https://www.gobankingrates.com/saving-money/food/grocery-store-items-waste-money/?utm_campaign=1061931&utm_source=yahoo.com&utm_content=4″ rel=”nofollow noopener” target=”_blank” data-ylk=”slk:40 Supermarket Buys That Are a Waste of Money” class=”link rapid-noclick-resp”>40 Supermarket Buys That Are a Waste of Money

<div class=”caas-img-container caas-img-loader”><img class=”caas-img caas-lazy has-preview” alt=”fruit, produce” src=”https://finance.yahoo.com/news/costly-mistakes-people-while-grocery-100018320.html” data-src=”https://s.yimg.com/ny/api/res/1.2/5wnSvHIp0l9okR1.fprC7A–/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTU0MA–/https://s.yimg.com/uu/api/res/1.2/OWK_p9OzaSE87sr2Q1Gobg–~B/aD0xMDgwO3c9MTkyMDthcHBpZD15dGFjaHlvbg–/https://media.zenfs.com/en/gobankingrates_644/14b4c768f59c3846d0e17f6d868c2359″><img alt=”fruit, produce” src=”https://s.yimg.com/ny/api/res/1.2/5wnSvHIp0l9okR1.fprC7A–/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTU0MA–/https://s.yimg.com/uu/api/res/1.2/OWK_p9OzaSE87sr2Q1Gobg–~B/aD0xMDgwO3c9MTkyMDthcHBpZD15dGFjaHlvbg–/https://media.zenfs.com/en/gobankingrates_644/14b4c768f59c3846d0e17f6d868c2359″ class=”caas-img”>

fruit, produce

Shopping the First Produce Display

You’ll often find marked-down produce in a big display as you enter the produce section, Gault said. Start with a 1-pound box of pasta, which makes eight servings and costs as little as $1.

<div class=”caas-img-container caas-img-loader”><img class=”caas-img caas-lazy has-preview” alt=”bagged produce, fruit, oranges, produce” src=”https://finance.yahoo.com/news/costly-mistakes-people-while-grocery-100018320.html” data-src=”https://s.yimg.com/ny/api/res/1.2/m2t.H47V9CmIkNWMyhP9iQ–/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTU0MA–/https://s.yimg.com/uu/api/res/1.2/0lRhn7V4Puu2TOcLftvLPQ–~B/aD0xMDgwO3c9MTkyMDthcHBpZD15dGFjaHlvbg–/https://media.zenfs.com/en/gobankingrates_644/9c0209e833863c583772ce9fb678b06c”><img alt=”bagged produce, fruit, oranges, produce” src=”https://s.yimg.com/ny/api/res/1.2/m2t.H47V9CmIkNWMyhP9iQ–/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTU0MA–/https://s.yimg.com/uu/api/res/1.2/0lRhn7V4Puu2TOcLftvLPQ–~B/aD0xMDgwO3c9MTkyMDthcHBpZD15dGFjaHlvbg–/https://media.zenfs.com/en/gobankingrates_644/9c0209e833863c583772ce9fb678b06c” class=”caas-img”>

bagged produce, fruit, oranges, produce

Buying Bagged Seasonal Fruit

Buying produce when it’s in season is a good way to get the best price on fruits and vegetables. But Gault said you should avoid buying seasonal fruit by the bag rather than by the pound.

For example, when apples are on sale for 99 cents a pound, a bag of the same type of apples will usually cost more, she said. The price of grapefruit, oranges, avocados and other fruits in season will also cost less by the pound than by the bag. The same applies to sales on individual produce, like avocados, which are usually cheaper by the pound than the bag.

<div class=”caas-img-container caas-img-loader”><img class=”caas-img caas-lazy has-preview” alt=”berries, frozen berries, frozen fruit, frozen produce” src=”https://finance.yahoo.com/news/costly-mistakes-people-while-grocery-100018320.html” data-src=”https://s.yimg.com/ny/api/res/1.2/qwEC9y3cevV_aA8XPS7icQ–/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTU0MA–/https://s.yimg.com/uu/api/res/1.2/5j0GmBNMbQ2kxOpgdxq5aQ–~B/aD0xMDgwO3c9MTkyMDthcHBpZD15dGFjaHlvbg–/https://media.zenfs.com/en/gobankingrates_644/cc8f2beafa98823977ee1eec0477194c”><img alt=”berries, frozen berries, frozen fruit, frozen produce” src=”https://s.yimg.com/ny/api/res/1.2/qwEC9y3cevV_aA8XPS7icQ–/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTU0MA–/https://s.yimg.com/uu/api/res/1.2/5j0GmBNMbQ2kxOpgdxq5aQ–~B/aD0xMDgwO3c9MTkyMDthcHBpZD15dGFjaHlvbg–/https://media.zenfs.com/en/gobankingrates_644/cc8f2beafa98823977ee1eec0477194c” class=”caas-img”>

berries, frozen berries, frozen fruit, frozen produce

Always Opting For Fresh Produce

During the winter, buying fresh produce gets more expensive because so few fruits and vegetables are in season. So, it’s the perfect time to turn to frozen options, which are less expensive.

Not only can you save money with frozen produce, but you might also get better quality fruits and vegetables. Frozen produce is picked when ripe and then flash-frozen — not picked ahead of time to allow for shipping time — so it can contain more of the vital nutrients you’re looking for.

<div class=”caas-img-container caas-img-loader”><img class=”caas-img caas-lazy has-preview” alt=”Portugal, Algarve, Monchique, Circa October 2013.” src=”https://finance.yahoo.com/news/costly-mistakes-people-while-grocery-100018320.html” data-src=”https://s.yimg.com/ny/api/res/1.2/dnz_GHD89zeZ2JaijQu97w–/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTYzNS42ODM2Mjk2NzUwNDY-/https://s.yimg.com/uu/api/res/1.2/pte6v1w09xvxLO.UdfZMyw–~B/aD0xMDgwO3c9MTYzMTthcHBpZD15dGFjaHlvbg–/https://media.zenfs.com/en/gobankingrates_644/9bae8773784ef7476a059c08aa4640ad”><img alt=”Portugal, Algarve, Monchique, Circa October 2013.” src=”https://s.yimg.com/ny/api/res/1.2/dnz_GHD89zeZ2JaijQu97w–/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTYzNS42ODM2Mjk2NzUwNDY-/https://s.yimg.com/uu/api/res/1.2/pte6v1w09xvxLO.UdfZMyw–~B/aD0xMDgwO3c9MTYzMTthcHBpZD15dGFjaHlvbg–/https://media.zenfs.com/en/gobankingrates_644/9bae8773784ef7476a059c08aa4640ad” class=”caas-img”>

Portugal, Algarve, Monchique, Circa October 2013.

Underbuying Things You Regularly Eat

Don’t waste money buying small packages of products you eat regularly. For example, perhaps you grab a 16-ounce bottle of soda near the checkout because it’s cold instead of a 2-liter bottle of soda that’s room temperature. You pay about the same price and get 75% less.

This applies to a variety of products. Although you shouldn’t buy more than you can consume or always assume that the biggest package is the best deal, you can save by buying more if you can freeze or store what you’re not going to use immediately. And you might get a better deal by purchasing, say, a big package of chips and parceling them out for school lunches rather than packing small, individual packages.

<div class=”caas-img-container caas-img-loader”><img class=”caas-img caas-lazy has-preview” alt=”MAN, comparison, latino” src=”https://finance.yahoo.com/news/costly-mistakes-people-while-grocery-100018320.html” data-src=”https://s.yimg.com/ny/api/res/1.2/1dTpEiEk8lzaKTVsmbcG5g–/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTU0MA–/https://s.yimg.com/uu/api/res/1.2/IS0nGzBig6Y4LegzrWKCvQ–~B/aD0xMDgwO3c9MTkyMDthcHBpZD15dGFjaHlvbg–/https://media.zenfs.com/en/gobankingrates_644/bf6e4481c09e2ffbdd8d013c3a19ddec”><img alt=”MAN, comparison, latino” src=”https://s.yimg.com/ny/api/res/1.2/1dTpEiEk8lzaKTVsmbcG5g–/YXBwaWQ9aGlnaGxhbmRlcjt3PTk2MDtoPTU0MA–/https://s.yimg.com/uu/api/res/1.2/IS0nGzBig6Y4LegzrWKCvQ–~B/aD0xMDgwO3c9MTkyMDthcHBpZD15dGFjaHlvbg–/https://media.zenfs.com/en/gobankingrates_644/bf6e4481c09e2ffbdd8d013c3a19ddec” class=”caas-img”>

MAN, comparison, latino

Comparing Prices Without Noticing Sizes

When you compare prices, you should also compare the amount you’re getting for the price.
