Declutter? Um, No!

The “TODAY” website has a post for this new year of 2021 about getting rid of 100 things in your home so you can declutter.
I quickly went through the list and it was a hard NO from me on some of the things they suggested throwing out.
First of all, unless something is worth selling, therefore going to another person who would hopefully make use of the item, your stuff is going to end up in the landfill. That’s a big deterrent right there for me. We send too many things to the landfill.
In their list of things to throw out, they suggest a chipped coffee mug. But what if that chipped coffee mug is my favourite mug? I am going to happily use that mug for years.
Number 8 on the list is rusted or broken tools or appliances. Don’t these people know how many videos I have watched on Facebook on how to make these rusted or broken tools into beautiful new useful tools? Sure, I may never get around to it but if I get rid of it I will never have the chance to spend countless hours and fifty bucks to return a ten dollar tool to its former glory.
Ratty dishcloths, towels and t-shirts. If you have ever seen me paint or do any kind of home repairs you would know that I am messy. Very messy. In fact the formula is one half hour for the job and an hour for the cleanup. Using these ratty things for cleanup means I don’t have to clean up the clean up tools.
In spite of what my wife Karen would tell you, I am not a hoarder in any sense of the word. In fact I am all for her throwing out her old makeup, candles, cookbooks, bath products, fancy bar soaps, costume jewelry, broken handbags, and many more from the list.
Just don’t touch that remote that belonged to the tv we got rid of in 2001.
Do you like to hang on to things or does decluttering bring you joy?
