Region breaks 6,000 COVID cases, and reports another death over New Year’s – KitchenerToday.com

Region of Waterloo Public Health reported 179 new COVID-19 cases on its dashboard Saturday afternoon.

This update includes both the COVID case numbers from December 31 and January 1.  

106 new cases were reported today, with alterations made to previous counts.

This brings the new total up to 6,078 cases for the region since March.

The number of active cases has increased to 578 from 518 since Thursday. 

Here are some other updates from the Region’s COVID summary dashboard on Saturday:

  • 5,326 resolved cases (88 per cent).
  • There have been 166 deaths in the region linked to the virus. The latest was confirmed on January 1.
  • 33 cases are currently hospitalized (12 in ICU). 

There are currently 42 active outbreaks in the region:

  • NEW Highland Place Retirement Home (one case in resident) 
  • Briarfield Retirement Residence – 3rd floor (one case in resident)

  • Chartwell Westmount LTC – Pioneer Unit (four cases in residents, five cases in staff)
  • Pinehaven long-term-care – Lower Unit (one case in staff)
  • Nithview Retirement Residence (one case in resident)
  • Forest Heights long-term-care (two cases in staff)
  • Fairview Mennonite Homes Retirement Suites (one case in staff)
  • Barnswallow long-term-care (four cases in staff)
  • Trinity Village long-term care (11 cases in staff)
  • St. Luke’s Place long-term care (three cases in staff)
  • Cambridge Country Manor (60 cases in residents, 64 in staff, 13 deaths)
  • Village of Winston Park retirement home (25 cases in residents, 25 cases in staff, three deaths)

  • Congregate setting 14 (nine cases)

The outbreaks at Clair Hills Retirement Home and a Food and Beverage Services workplace have ended.

Below is the provincial COVID-19 summary for Saturday:

  • 187,998 total cases (3,363 today, 2,476 yesterday). 
  • 160,526 cases are resolved (85 per cent).
  • 4,625 related deaths (95 new today).
  • 1,003 hospitalized (322 in the ICU).
