The front of the old J.C. Penney store at White Sands Mall had a couple of tables set up outside, one had rows of Scott’s Toilet Paper, a box of hand sanitizer bottles and a box of disposable face masks.

The front of the table announced it was Thrive of Southern New Mexico and this was the Thrive Toy Drive for Toys for Tots.

“We’re out here today supporting our local Toys for Tots program,” Thrive spokeswoman Stephanie Hale said.

The first 50 people who donated toys or funds to Toys for Tots received a roll of toilet paper, a bottle of hand sanitizer and a coupon for a free Sin Roll from Our Country Kitchen, 1201 North New York Avenue.

Our Country Kitchen’s Sin Roll is a giant cinnamon roll and one of Our Country Kitchen’s specialties.

“We just appreciate Stephanie Hale and the staff there at Thrive of Southern New Mexico for coming up with the idea,” Otero County Toys for Tots Coordinator Wally Anderson said.

Toys for Tots is accepting toy recipient applications until Dec. 18. Applications can be filled out and submitted online at the Alamogordo Toys for Tots website.

Toys will be given out in a drive-thru fashion on Dec. 23 and will be distributed by the child’s last name.
