Coupon for students to buy food items of choice; more than 27 lakh students to benefit

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The education department has decided to provide food coupons as food security allowance instead of kits for students in public schools. Students will receive food rations from September 2020 to March 2021 as coupons which will be delivered to schools soon. With these coupons, parents can go to the Supplyco store and buy food items of choice. More than 27 lakh children from pre-primary to eighth standard in government and aided schools will benefit from this.

The coupon system was set up by the Department of Education after Supplyco officials said it was difficult to prepare a kit for students while preparing food kits for ration cardholders in the Covid situation. According to the agreement with Supplyco, the food items will be available for an additional 4.07% to 4.87% of the coupon amount. With this the food allowance for pre-primary and primary children has been increased to Rs.300. Upper primary students can buy items for as much as Rs 500.

For the security of the coupons, the ration card number should be written on the coupon at the school level. The coupon number will be recorded on the ration card at the time of delivery of food items.
