Nelson Community Food Centre celebrates with Festive Food Days – Nelson Star

Submitted by the Nelson Community Food Centre

For the fourth year, the Nelson Community Food Centre is celebrating the season with their Festive Food Days. The idea is to share healthful, festive food over the first four Wednesdays of December with people who might not otherwise be able to afford it. A week is being added this year to help out a little more.

With COVID-19 protocols in place, people visiting the Community Food Centre Wednesday afternoons 1 to 5 p.m. will get to choose from a variety of specialty items. Things like cheese, butter, poultry, granola, pancake mix, baked goods, cranberry sauce, and more, will be on offer. Two Kids Club programs are also running this month, culminating in a Baker’s Bag pick-up on Dec. 23.

Generous donors have also provided wool socks, neck gaiters and, early in the month, CBAL is providing books for all ages. By spreading out the festivities over several weeks, the intention is to help as many people as possible, for as long as possible.

If you are low on funds this holiday season, and haven’t yet used the Centre’s Good Food Bank, please call 250-354-1633, add your first name to the list, and get a time to visit on Wednesday afternoon. New participants are welcome.

The Nelson Community Food Centre is looking for donations to help these programs bring some happiness into the holiday season for our community. You may have seen posters around town — here are the numbers: $60 provides for a single person, $150 for a small family and $250 for a large family. The global pandemic has been very difficult for many Nelsonites — healthy food can make a big difference.

For more information about how to make a donation (and how it will be put to use), call Andrew Creighton at 250-551-0305. If you would like to donate through the organization’s website, visit them at nelsoncfc.ca and click the DONATE button.
